HTC’s New AR Headset Prototype Resembles A Pair of Sunglasses
HTC is keen on making AR headsets look as banal and every day as possible, and this is evident in their latest prototype!
The newest from HTC Vive Cosmos is an AR headset that resembles a pair of sunglasses. This Mixed Reality device has been codenamed “Project Proton.” While this all-new device is still in the stages of prototyping, HTC has already shared some goals of the company regarding the device as well as the preliminary images of the design.
The Manager of Vive Americas, Dan O’Brien, is optimistic about the results and says, “We’re still iterating on that idea. The experience isn’t quite there. But we do think that we’re making very good strides in that direction.”
Proton seems quite similar in its functionality to HTC’s Vive Cosmos XR. Both these options of AR headsets are expected to allow users to have a highly immersive experience. Moreover, XR boasts of blending the virtual and physical worlds in a way that they interact and intersect.
In the same vein, both Proton and XR have been designed to offer augmented reality and mixed reality experiences to the users. The initial images shared by HTC show that while Cosmos XR looks more like a sturdy VR headset, the designs of Proton resemble more like large sunglasses or ski goggles.
As stated by the CEO of HTC, Yves Maitre, “We do believe that it’s not reasonable to have a 5G antenna near the brain of customers, so obviously, this is something that we don’t want to do.” This is in response to the buzz that the design of Proton could support 5G.
This is an intriguing theory in concept as we assume it will be in reality because we can’t help but assume a 5G antenna placed on the headset near its head!
In any case, both the upcoming Cosmos XR and Proton have already hooked our imaginations. Although the Proton is still in the development phase, the progress is steady.
No price or specifications have yet been established, but we do know that Proton will use high-resolution microdisplays. HTC is keen on making AR headsets look as banal and every day as possible, and this is evident in the blueprints of Proton!
