We have come a long way from organizing skits and taking to the streets with banners as well as posters to spread awareness on relevant social and environmental causes. Today, the world of technology has seamlessly blended with awareness campaigns, and the all-new #CleanSeas AR experience is an excellent example of this novelty.

MeshMinds, the Singapore-based creative technology studio, has now collaborated with UN Environment in order to attain sustainable development goals by mobilizing creative technology. This studio is already popular for the creation of engaging, immersive, and impactful experiences, and this new development creates the perfect technological backdrop to educate people on the necessity of “clean” seas.

According to MeshMind’s Chief Connecting Officer, Kay Vasey, “We can track engagement and impact. We find that the dwell time on such augmented reality experiences is significantly longer compared to viewing static content. The level of interactivity helps people engage more with the problem of ocean pollution. We are seeing that this translates into conscious buying decisions and people sharing that they intend to change their plastic consumption habits.”

Basically, what they have done is create a virtual ocean packed with your usual sea animals that have been built using plastic waste. This platform allows users to interact seamlessly with this virtual world and enables them to “clean” the sea. Furthermore, they can also take a social pledge which can be shared on Facebook.

This initiative is a massive game-changer for improving marine life. This augmented reality experience was presented at Climate S.O.S – Season of Sustainability, an event hosted by the Singapore ArtScience Museum. This AR experience has been created by using a healthy dose of art by artists across the world in a bid to spread awareness on a number of environmental problems we face today.

As shared by the Executive Director of the museum, Honor Harger, the museum has a deep link and commitment to all things sustainable. This current AR and VR campaign is another step to protect our ecosystems and make this planet a more sustainable place for all living beings.
